Rob Hayden - Should Check
Thursday Jul 11, 2024
Thursday Jul 11, 2024
The Shoulder Check team is growing far beyond Connecticut (programs in Chicago, Boston, Washington, D.C., Minnesota, South Carolina and California) and hockey (there are already versions in other sports, and we discuss how it could translate to the likes of school bands and the fashion industry). The movement sparked by Hayden Thorsen , who died by suicide at age 16 two years ago. Rob Hayden's, Hayden's father, empathy for friends and strangers is the driver of Shoulder Check, which emphasizes the importance of checking in on others. It’s simple in concept and execution, based on Hayden’s habit of putting his hand on the shoulder of friends and family. His HT40 Foundation mines Hayden’s initials and jersey number and they are striving to make Shoulder Check as recognizable as the pink ribbon has become for breast cancer in just three decades. Rob and his team cast a direct gaze on the mental health challenge as well. The pandemic may have amplified feelings of isolation, but the social problem predates COVID. Ultimately, Shoulder Check is not about crisis intervention. Rob routinely summons the phrase, “it’s upstream from that.” It’s about nothing less than making people more sensitive to one another. That’s no easy feat in 2024. NHL players take part in 1st Shoulder Check Showcase. Ducks forward Zegras, Kreider of Rangers among those at fundraising event for HT40 Foundation. Rob is the Founder of The #HT40 Foundation & Shoulder Check, Hayden’s father ROB HAYDEN.
