JEREMY ROSENTHAL takes a look at some of the legal stories making headlines in this weekly segment:
TOPIC 1- WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO TRUMP'S LEGAL ISSUES AFTER THE ELECTION?
Whether Trump wins or loses, the 2024 election results could affect the outcomes of his civil and criminal cases. Donald Trump has more than just the presidency on the line Nov. 5 — the outcome of his various legal troubles hinges on the election, as well. A win in the election he’s dubbed “the most important“ in the history of the country would likely result in the federal criminal cases against him being dismissed, with state criminal cases possibly being frozen until he leaves office and additional delays in the various pending civil cases against him. A loss to Vice President Kamala Harris, however, could see Trump facing a potential jail sentence later in the month for his criminal conviction in New York and the possibility of additional criminal trials in 2025. It could also leave him open to additional civil trials in the near future, while he’s already appealing $500 million in civil judgments against him.
TOPIC 2- ELON MUSK LAWYER SAYS $1 MILLION VOTER GIVEAWAY WINNERS ARE NOT RANDOM
Elon Musk's pro-Trump group does not choose the winners of its $1 million-a-day giveaway to registered voters at random, but instead picks people who would be good spokespeople for its agenda, a lawyer for the billionaire said. Musk lawyer Chris Gober was trying to persuade a Pennsylvania judge that the giveaway was not an "illegal lottery," as Philadelphia district attorney Lawrence Krasner alleged in a lawsuit seeking to block the contest ahead of Tuesday's U.S. presidential election. Liberal San Francisco is hardly a hotbed of anti-COVID vaxxers – more than 90% of the city’s population got the shot, according to government data, opens new tab. That’s partly why I found a verdict, opens new tab by a San Francisco federal jury last week in favor of six public transit workers who were fired for refusing to comply with their employer’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate on religious grounds so unexpected. Jurors awarded the Bay Area Rapid Transit, or BART, ex-employees more than $1 million each for workplace civil rights violations, for a total of $7.8 million.
TOPIC 3- TRUMP SUES CBS NEWS FOR $10 BILLION ALLEGING 'DECEPTIVE DOCTORING' OF HARRIS' '60 MINUTES' INTERVIEW
CBS practices 'news distortion' intended to 'confuse, deceive and mislead the public,' the lawsuit says. Former President Trump is suing CBS News for $10 billion in damages, stating the network practiced "deceptive conduct" for the purpose of election interference in its interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. Fox News Digital exclusively obtained the lawsuit filed. Trump attorneys said the complaint comes due to "CBS’ partisan and unlawful acts of election and voter interference through malicious, deceptive, and substantial news distortion calculated to confuse, deceive, and mislead the public."
