US SECRET SERVICE FUNDING BATTLE
Lawmakers are locked in a heated debate over Secret Service funding after two assassination attempts on former President Donald Trump. Acting USSS Director Ronald Rowe says the agency’s internal report on the first assassination attempt is nearing completion and hints that people will face consequences. So far, at least five people have been placed on administrative duty. Rowe has urged Congress to invest significantly in the agency to address its shortcomings and adapt to a new era of threats. The Biden administration says it’s also called on Congress to boost funding for the Secret Service, but some House Republicans say the security failures won’t be fixed with more money. Meanwhile, Sen. Josh Hawley has raised concerns over whistleblower allegations highlighting known vulnerabilities in security at Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach. A briefing for House lawmakers revealed that Trump had similar security measures to President Biden during the recent attempt, after being upgraded in the wake of the first shooting at a rally in Pennsylvania.
